Devil's Claw is a sprawling groundcover native to the Kalahari Desert region of southern Africa, related to sesame. What's harvested is the root and its secondary tubers, which are fibrous and woody with almost no aroma of their own.
This cut-and-sifted form is traditionally simmered into tea or used as a base for extracts, and its pronounced bitterness is often softened by pairing it with a sweeter herb like ginger or licorice.
